Where should a CNA place their hand to check a patient's pulse?

To check a patient's pulse, the most appropriate locations are the wrist and neck. The wrist is commonly used to feel the radial pulse, which is located on the thumb side of the wrist. The neck is used for the carotid pulse, found just beside the trachea. Both of these areas have arteries close to the surface of the skin, making them ideal for palpating the pulse.

Using the shoulder or abdomen is not suitable for taking a pulse. The shoulder does not have a prominent artery that can easily be palpated, and the abdomen is not a common location for pulse assessment. Therefore, placing the hand on the wrist or neck effectively enables the CNA to accurately assess the patient's heart rate and rhythm.
